Sim Racing 101 : rFactor 2. What Could Be... But Isn't Currently. (Ep4)
This episode is a bit more "opinion" based than the others but still very much rooted in fact. Yes, I do kind of slag off ISI, and yes, they kind of put themselves in this position.
rFactor 2 could be the one. Could end up being nothing more than what it is currently - a rather bleh sim. Maybe it's just me, but I actually like racing, and currently... well... that ain't happening without hitches. But at the same time....
The force feedback... oh man. Oh man.
The physics (when they work properly)... top notch.
But then it's back to reality - why so damn many stupid things in this game? Why is this not actually beta - for ISI's own protection... No one in their right mind would consider this even a decent launch package. Seeing how it isn't "beta" I have to view this as a actual title - akin to the way Gran Turismo 5 went down if you are familiar with that game. It had updates done to it, but you don't wait until the end to say what it is. Do you?
Keep in mind, rFactor 2 was officially in beta for around a year. It can be so very good - but will it. Will it. I hope it does, but we have to wait.
rFactor 2 offers two purchasing option. For $45 you get the sim and one year online service (automatic updates and multiplayer), or for $85 a lifetime package.

IMO, I can't see justifying the $85, and I love sim racing and have every major title since the late 90s. Right now the online is just about broken, Get Mod (automatically downloading mods as you join, like many FPS games do for map) more or less doesn't work, the auto updater is usually latent in getting the update, and then there is the fact just about no one is racing online outside a league. And then there is the fact that the online racing in an open server is well documented.
I can't say "avoid" because I know what it very well could be, but I want to say avoid. Had I known where rF2 would be a year or so after purchasing it I wouldn't have bought it. Too much frustration, too many bugs, not enough racing. You can say it will improve and features added - but until that actually happens you have what you have.
Seeing how it's not beta I can officially say that Mr. Wheatley. That, is the difference.
