REVIEW: 1/5
Siren Head is one of many cryptids that immediately caught my attention. It has an eerily slender form, towering above any normal human, and emits sirens from, (obviously), its head. I really love the concept because siren sounds have always struck a chord of fear within me, as I'm sure they're designed to do, so as soon as one of those sounds play, I'm put on edge. In the game, two different sounds are used- a tornado-like warning and the national weather siren. Both are used for fairly serious concerns, so I think they were a good choice in terms of what to use. That said, I think that was the only positive I have for this project.
Siren Head was made in the vein of a PS1 game, so there are blocky models and grainy textures everywhere, which has been a popular aesthetic for horror games for a minute now. This isn't bad, but there's not enough of a game present or unique design to differentiate it from anything else. It just feels very generic as-is. Siren Head itself isn't much different; it's dark when you meet it, so it essentially reveals itself as a silhouette. On top of that, there's no real, "oh shit," moment when you see it, because it just appears behind you when you inspect the proper element. I simply walked around it while it began to blare its second siren and calmly made my way back to the car, ending the game. The only objective it seemed was to observe the phenomena that pointed to a backpacker being captured and killed, but the monster itself gave me no sense of urgency or fear.
If this was just a proof of concept for an actual game, I'd be all for it. I think something along the lines of Slender: The Arrival or even the original Slenderman game, which was much more minimal, would be great. I would love to see a fleshed-out version that gives me reason to fear the monster as well as actual goals to accomplish that Siren Head could stand in the way of. Maybe something where it mimics certain sounds or signals that you're trying to follow to safety in order to snare you in its trap. I firmly believe there's potential to bring Siren Head's lore into a gameplay setting and terrify players, but it's not to be found here.
