Skater XL allows you to use custom maps, and gear including changing your hat, wheels, trucks, deck, grip tape, shirts, pants, shoes, and hoodies. On your computer, I am on Windows 10, so I go to This PC - Documents - SkaterXL - then have both a Gear & Maps folder within the SkaterXL folder. When it comes to maps, they can be named anything. Gear on the other hand must be named properly or they won't show up in your game. Examples.

Hats = MHatDad_ Then whatever you want, like MHatDad_Purple_Nike.png
Hoodies = MHoodie_
Shirts = MShirt_
Pants = MPants_
Shoes = MShoes_
Trucks = Trucks_
Wheels = Wheels_

Maps go in the Maps folder. Gear goes in the Gear folder. No subfolders are required for hats, shirts, etc. You can dump ALL gear in that one folder.
