Have you ever had a really terrible day and wanted to yell, kick, and scream? Well, what if you chose a more… palatable… route, like sketching? That's the idea behind Seth Worley's thought-provoking fantasy movie, Sketch. The film, which had its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, is as colorful visually as it is in its messaging.
In the movie, Bianca Belle's Amber is a quiet, imaginative young girl who uses her sketchbook as her refuge. When her father, Taylor (Tony Hale), comes across her violent, over-the-top sketches that illustrate her pent-up frustrations and emotional turmoil following the death of her mother, he's initially concerned, but soon learns that there is more than meets the eye. Amber's brother, Jack (Kue Lawrence), discovers a magical pond that transforms her images into real-life monsters, which soon turns the entire town into a chaotic, colorful nightmare that can only be saved by Bianca, Jack, and their wise-cracking friend, Bowman (Kalon Cox) as well as their aunt, Liz (D'Arcy Carden).
During this interview with Collider, writer, director, and editor extraordinaire Seth Worley detailed the exact moment in his life that inspired him to write this movie and what it is like transitioning from shorts to a feature-length project. Plus, stars Bianca Belle and Kalon Cox explain how complicated (and hot) certain filming days were, what moments were improvised, and what they'd throw into the magic body of water in the movie that brings things to life and fixes things if it existed in real life.
