In this interview, Collider’s Steve Weintraub talks with filmmaker David Mackenzie for his latest paranoid thriller, Relay, starring Riz Ahmed and Lily James.
In the movie, Ahmed plays Ash, a broker of risky payoffs between corrupt corporations and the whistleblowers threatening to expose their schemes. Typically committed to his work and the painstaking steps it takes to maintain his anonymity, Ash’s latest job turns his world upside down when a client (James) begs him to help save her life.
During their conversation, Mackenzie reflects on his work with Taylor Sheridan on Hell or High Water, pre-Yellowstone fame, his affinity for filming tense oners, and working with Relay’s propulsive script. He also talks about crafting a pressure cooker film through dialogue and the edit, and filming in New York City.
