4At long last it's time to put the College of Winterhold main questline to rest for good. With our plot coupon in hand, we head back to the College to confront Ancano. But we can't just enter the College - that would be too easy. Instead, a couple of Magic Anomalies have spawned that we have to deal with first, because they were so much fun the first time around.
After taking care of them it's time at last for the final showdown. We head inside, and like any good villain Ancano has to monologue a little first. Once he's done it's a simple matter of using the Staff on the Eye to take away his invincibility, then stunlock him to death with fireballs, making sure to soul trap him at the last second. I'll definitely reserve a prominent place in one of my houses for his soul gem. I wish I could raise him as a dead thrall, but unfortunately he's too high level for that.
After that the Psijics show up again to teleport the Eye away, naturally raising the question of why they didn't just do this in the first place. I guess they really wanted us to become the Arch-Mage for some reason. Speaking of which, they're the ones who declare us the new Arch-Mage, and Tolfdir and everyone else just rolls with it without question. So yeah, we went from apprentice mage just a couple of weeks ago to leapfrogging the entire senior staff of the College into the head position.
Obviously the point of all four guild questlines is to become the head of the guild by the end, but I have to say that this one feels the least earned of all of them. With the Companions we built a pretty good resume by the end - we killed the Glenmoril witches, thus providing a way to free the Companions from lycanthropy; we retrieved all the fragments of Wuuthrad, allowing it to be reforged; we wiped out the Silver Hand; and at the end of it all we freed Kodlak's soul from beyond the grave and got his blessing to be the next Harbinger. With the Thieves Guild we'll become a Nightingale of Nocturnal, then take out the corrupt guild master in a one-on-one fight, and with the Dark Brotherhood we'll be chosen by the Night Mother herself to be the new Listener. But here? We just went a bunch of different places people told us to go to because they were too lazy to do it themselves, then are anointed by some mysterious other mages who have no authority over the College to make such a decision. And worse, like we said, everyone in the College is just cool with it, despite it being clear from dealing with the other mages that politics and jockeying for position are definitely a thing in the College.
Anyways, back to where we were, the outcome of it all is that we're the new Arch-Mage, so we head up to loot the Arch-Mage's quarters of all the wonderful goodies to be found there. After that we head back to Whiterun for a sort n' sell. We only have a couple of side quests to finish up before we'll be done with everything College related for good.
