Skyrim 100% Maximized Legendary Playthrough - 286. The Pursuit
We head back to Winterhold to bring Enthir the rubbing we took from Calcelmo's laboratory so that he can translate Gallus' journal. I guess Enthir is a savant with languages, because he's able to translate it instantly by referencing the rubbing that has the same text in both Dwemer and Falmer. We learn that Mercer has betrayed the Nightingales and violated the Twilight Sepulcher. I like the fact that these things are not immediately explained to us, but left as mysteries for the moment.
For now the task becomes heading back to the Guild to convince everyone else that Mercer is a traitor. We manage it by showing them the journal, although certain elements - like how Brynjolf can trust that the journal is authentic and belonged to Gallus - are of course glossed over. The real proof though is the fact that the Thieves Guild vault has been cleared out, and money speaks loudest of all, so we win them over.
Brynjolf tasks us with infiltrating Mercer's house in the city, Riftweald Manor, to try to locate clues as to where he might have gone - even though Brynjolf tells us Mercer never really stayed there, so I'm not sure why that's the logical place to look. In any case we take care of a side quest to clear Vald's debt - the guard outside - so we can enter the place.
There's not a lot inside. The guards inside are technically bandits, so normally we wouldn't have qualms about killing them, but we let them live because we're feeling generous. There's really nothing in the house, but we find a secret passage to a hidden room underground, and inside is the clue we need. Mercer has committed the most elementary mistake by leaving a document outlining his plans. Rule 1 about writing out your plans - if you need it, you take it with you, otherwise you burn it. I guess he was figuring no one would manage to break into Riftweald and find his secret hideout, but it's still careless.
We return to Brynjolf and find out Mercer is going after something called the Eyes of the Falmer. Instead of going straight after him, Karliah informs us that we're simply not good enough, since Mercer is a Nightingale. Never mind that I'm a Dragonborn, a Vampire Lord, Harbinger of the Companions, and Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold, that's still apparently not enough to take on a Nightingale. So next time we're off to meet Karliah and sell our soul to a Daedric lord. Not the first time, won't be the last.
