Skyrim 100% Maximized Legendary Playthrough - 318. Deepwood Redoubt
We've still got a little more to do before we start on act 3 of the Dark Brotherhood questline. Today we're following up on a side quest we picked up as our bonus from the Breaching Security quest. We got Olava the Feeble to tell our fortune, and she told us to seek out the assassin of old inside Hag's End. Hag's End is a Nordic tower at the end of Deepwood Redoubt, which is itself a mountain valley filled with Forsworn. So today we're off to the northern edge of the Reach to uncover some lost treasure.
We do a little inventory cleanup from last time before fast traveling to Volskygge, which is not very far from the entrance. There are just a few Forsworn guarding the entrance who go down easily to our sneak attacks. After clearing out the area, we're ready to proceed inside. However, something unusual happens. We start hearing a dragon flying around, but can't see it. This will have consequences later inside the valley.
The actual zone Deepwood Redoubt is really just a small cavern with some Nordic architecture that leads to the valley where the bulk of the location lies. We clear it of more Forsworn and minor treasure before emerging in Deepwood Vale, where things really start to get interesting.
The vale is a large valley with a significant Nordic edifice at the other end, and naturally it's crawling with Forsworn. We decide to take the tactic of clearing out the valley first, then going back and looting everything later. Exploration is so much easier when you don't have to worry about an enemy surprising you. Besides, it's still nighttime when we arrive, which is not conducive to exploration anyway.
We start stealth-killing the Forsworn, and everything is going great at first. However, we've picked up a black soul gem along the way, which are incredibly valuable to us and we don't want to waste on some unnamed Forsworn. Normally when you have both an empty black soul gem and empty Black Star, soul trapping an enemy will fill the Black Star first. However, after one of our Forsworn kills it used the soul gem instead, and not wanting to lose it, we're forced to reload from when we first entered the valley and start again.
That annoyance aside, we take down the Forsworn in quick succession yet again. We arrive at the end of the valley where the entrance to Hag's End is and discover that we had two other quests that had this location as a target. First, Logrolf the Willful is inside the tent at the end. We free him, and once we're done with this location we'll head back to Markarth to finish up The House of Horrors. Also, we had a bounty quest to clean this place out.
As we've been moving through the valley we've been hearing a dragon just like we did outside, but yet none has appeared. Then after we head back to the beginning of the valley finally a legendary dragon appears and attacks us. After taking it down we've crossed the 50 minute mark and decide this will be a good place to cut. We still need to loot the whole valley, and then do Hag's End, which is a whole location unto itself. That's where we'll pick up next time.
