*Part of Skyrim - Home of the Nords*

Once one of the great High-Elven nations, like the Dwemer and the Ayleids, the Direnni was a civilization that once flourished in Tamriel, and at its height, occupied most of High Rock, northern Hammerfell, and western Skyrim. Today, however, the Direnni can largely only be found on the island of Balfiera in the Iliac Bay, their once great empire now little more than a small island kingdom, one of many kingdoms in the land of High Rock.

The Direnni civilization, unlike their cousins on the mainland, the Ayleids and the Dwemer, didn't lose their empire all at once, but rather gradually through a series of devastating wars, culminating in the Alessian War, a war which the Direnni would win, but at such great cost that they were forced to abandon many of their holdings, leaving behind decrepit old keeps, towers, and once prosperous towns abandoned, scattered all over Skyrim, High Rock, and Hammerfell.

Perhaps the most famous of these ruins is Elfstone Keep in Markarth, long since converted into a palace, and where King Barda now rules over his subjects. Many other ruins have likewise been converted into villages or settlements, either for Nords or Reachmen or some other group entirely. While yet others have been left to the dead, and draw all sorts of nefarious figures, from necromancers to conjurers, bandits, and rebels.

Many of these pristine ruins, out in the wilderness of the Reach, are a prime destination for adventurers and treasure seekers, looking to get their hands on ancient Direnni artifacts, or, more valuable yet, a Magus Console, which to this day still powers many of these old ruins, providing a dim light by which to explore their dusty corridors. The Direnni, you see, were masters of Sky Magicka, and were able to bind sky magic into stones called Star Teeth, similar to the varla stones of the Ayleids. These Star Teeth are highly prized and sought after, and many collectors and wizards would pay a small fortune to acquire one.

Still, these old ruins are full of dangers, and any adventurer who would dare to explore their dark and mysterious depths should come fully prepared.

You can actually play through and explore a couple of these Direnni ruins today, with the Karthwasten release of Skyrim - Home of the Nords! And as always, if you have any interest in helping out with this ambitious project, check out the project links below for more information!
