Alchemy is both one of the most OP skills in the game, especially in conjunction with enchanting, and certainly one of the most if not the most profitable. By focusing on profitable potions for sale, you can level alchemy faster than if you focused only on potions for your own use (though those are of course very important too.) At the same time, selling those expensive potions will level your speechcraft, so you can make even more money from selling potions in the future.

The most profitable potion I know of is salmon roe (if you have the Hearthfire DLC) combined with either chicken egg, histcarp, or nordic barnacle. The most profitable potion I know of with ingredients readily available at alchemist shops is giants toe, hanging moss and wheat. There are likely others, these are my go-to potions for sale.

Even beginners should know Restore Health: butterfly wing and blue mountain flower. Beginning mages should know Restore Magicka: red mountain flower and mora tapinella. Beginning melee warriors should know restore stamina: mudcrab chitin and purple mountain flower. They should also know regenerate stamina: bee and fly amanita. Beginning thieves and assassins should know invisibility: vampire dust and luna moth wing.

As soon as you are able, obtain an enchanted item of fortify alchemy and disenchant it. You will then be able to create enchanted clothing that will significantly increase the power of your potions. My current character has 5 items of clothing enchanted with a fortify alchemy enchantment, making his alchemy 55% more powerful.

It is however possible to level alchemy too quickly early on, at the neglect of your main combat and defense skills, so if you are a melee fighter for instance don't get to level 50 alchemy while you are still only level 10 with your weapon skills or you will get beaten a lot. The same can be true of enchanting if a little less so. As long as you are focusing on your attack and defense (armor for instance) skills as much as on your alchemy, it shouldn't be a problem.
