Skyrim -- Using Defensive Spells
Main alternatives are presented regarding how defensive spell may be used in the game. Included:
1) The rules as written;
2) The rules as amended by Errata 1.0 by Modiphius
3) My ideas, that were used in my recent play through videos. In my opinion, the rules as written were inadequate, and at the time I recorded the video, I was unaware of the Errata, which I believe partially, but not completely, addresses the issues.
The errata may be found at the following web address or via a web search:

The basic idea behind "My Ideas" is that spells bifurcate into "instantaneous" spells and "duration spells". Duration are spells that are active for a PERIOD of TIME, rather than for moment.
Duration Spells:
1) May be cast before the combat sequence begins, and have full effect even in the first round of combat.
2) Are cast with the spell card or staff in hand.
3) Do NOT require that the spell card or staff be maintained in-hand to remain in effect;
4) Require a maintenance toll of 1 Magika per combat round to stay in effect; Once cast, spells originating from a staff are maintained EXACTLY like spells cast from a spell card.
5) May be in-force for an entire turn, assuming the maintenance cost is continued to be paid, even from one encounter to another.
6) When Ambushed, players lose all benefits from Duration Spells for the ambush attack ONLY; Duration Spells that have been cast and paid for ARE in full effect during the first non-Ambush round of combat.
The main advantages are:
1) The rules play more like the computer version of Skyrim, where preparation may include casting duration spells, such as Oakflesh, PRIOR to the fight starting.
2) Duration spells, including Conjuration and Muffle, do not require special cases. They, and other such spells (e.g. Oakflesh) all are cast and maintained with the same set of rules.
That's what I am doing. Its a fantasy game, so have fun with making it YOUR game! There are no wrong answers here.
