SM64 - Chip Off Whomp's Block - 0x A Presses
515I collect the star Chip Off Whomp's Block using 0 A presses.
I've been pondering how to do this strategy for months! I've known for a while that Mario could bring the cork box all the way up to King Whomp, grab it fake, and use King Whomp to hold the fake box hands free. I also knew that you could clone the star if you had VS41 when you ground pounded King Whomp. However, I was not able to bridge these two techniques. The core dilemma is that Mario can hardly move when he holds something hands free (usually I'd jump constantly, but you can't do that for an ABC star!). In fact, while Mario is on the ground, his only legal move that won't disrupt the hands free object is punching. Fortunately, I realized that grinding would greatly come in handy, since Mario can essentially switch between being on land and in the air, which allows the hands free holding to go on (whereas if you stand still for a second, Mario will drop it). Thus I grind on the elevator (along with punches to help push me off the edge) until I'm above King Whomp, at which point I do the final ground pound, clone the star, and collect it.
It is worth noting that my having cloned the star was no act of luck. You see, to clone the star Mario needs to be holding VS41 (a reference to the 41st next vacant slot - watch my Science of Cloning video if you don't understand this). Grabbing a fake cork box that breaks gives Mario VS45 (after the 3 coins disappear). And so to go from VS45 to VS41, I load 4 coins. Which 4 coins you ask? Why, the 4 coins I didn't collect earlier as part of the arrow of coins. Remember when I left 4 coins there? I did that purposely in order to clone the star!
