SM64 - In the Deep Freeze - No Buttons Allowed
I collect the star In the Deep Freeze in Snowman's Land without using any buttons (I only use the joystick and adjust the camera angle).
To do this, I move a moneybag all the way over to the shell's item block, duplicate the moneybag excessively, and then ride over to the shell by repeatedly bouncing on the moneybags. From there, I ride the shell backwards down hills to gain enough speed to launch over to the star. I actually conceived of this idea back when I moved the moneybags to underneath the bully's platform to assist with the red coin star, but didn't get around to TAS'ing it until today.
The hardest part was moving the moneybag up the steep hill. Moneybags are extremely stubborn to work with, and so it took MANY re-records to get them to go to climb higher up the hill consistently. It was especially difficult to transition the moneybag from the hill's slope to the flat surface above the hill, but I figured out that knocking it back with Mario's own body was the simplest way to do it. From there, it was a simple matter of moving the moneybag to the item block (without it falling into the water), and then duplicating it. Then to initiate the bouncing spree, I used the bounce from Mario's sitting position. Once the bouncing spree started, I had to move slowly so that I could activate the moneybags in front of me before bouncing on them.
Now to answer questions about the shell's hyper speed. While riding a shell, Mario will pick up speed if he rides it down a hill. While is forwards speed is capped, his backwards speed is not, and so I consistently ride downhill until I have a lot of speed. Although it looks like I'm going sideways on the hill, I'm actually going slightly downhill. It's actually best to go nearly sideways on the hill because it allows Mario to travel the furthest distance before he reaches the bottom of the hill and needs to go back up (which wastes speed). The peak speed I reached was -448, and I have -397 left by the time I launch myself. It was important that I landed exactly inside the star's hole, as opposed to before or after it, since landing anywhere else would fly off the structure, after possibly gliding over the hole.
