When the time came for new fighters to be chosen for Smash 3DS / Wii U, a new Pokemon was one of the choices Sakurai had to make. He went to Game Freak for advice on which Pokemon to pick, and they gave him concept art of Greninja. This resulted in Greninja becoming playable in Smash before his origin games (Pokemon X and Y) were even released.
