Smash for 3DS created unprecedented problems for transformation fighters, a.k.a. 2-in-1 fighters that can switch between each other mid-match. Due to hardware limitations, these characters had to be permanently split off into separate fighters. Most of these changes carried over into Smash Ultimate.
