Anyway, I've recently discovered a hack while scrolling through YouTube and SelfMadeIsland did a full gameplay of it as well as another YouTuber did a playthrough of it and even had a playlist. I looked at the videos for preview and it was a promising hack since I love custom, shaded or improved graphics a lot like the ones used in this game.

With that, I played and completed it. With average difficulty, it was fun to complete as well as the exits themselves with the exception of ghost houses taking quite a lot of time due to puzzles and such.

I'll give a pretty short review about this hack. First of all, the name of this hack is quite bland since it was just named 'Mario Game'. Surely, a better name could be more appropriate to it but if it's just a rom hack made for fun then I guess I'll let it slip. I mean the whole plotline is just saving the princess from Bowser which turns out it's not actually the princess but rather a multi-dimensional entity that looks like Mario's silhouette disguised as Peach and wants to take over the world and all that.

I had a lot of fun playing the levels since there's only 3 Yoshi coins (it's called DF coins here based from the creator of this hack: Draconif) and that they are so easy to spot as well as I won't have to worry about collecting like 5 as in usual Mario hacks including the original one! There's less things to worry plus I'm a completionist so even Dragon/Yoshi coins are significant in every SMW ROM hack I do unless I really can't find them (not if I use cheat codes to have it xd). World 7 is a little bit too much for a Mario game especially with suggestive and graphic visuals and disturbing textboxs but it really delivered a scare impact to the hack.

So to shorten things off I'll just do a personal bullet list of the pros and cons I have found in my playthrough of this hack.

Pros:

➤ Custom, improved, and detailed sprites and visuals from overworld to level design itself including Mario, too.
➤ Custom music and almost each level has a unique music given to it.
➤ Kept the overworld color change after beating the special world.
➤ Simple and easy level design for DF coins and such.
➤ Only 3 DF coins so there's less to worry xd.
➤ Shortcuts in overworld exists.
➤ There are cutscenes and I love that part where Bowser plays the organ lol.


Cons:

➤ No item box to store power-ups.
➤ Typos on some level names
➤ Sizzling Stronghold in World 5 (Shiverburn Ridge) had the regular SMW Castle soundtrack. Idk if this was intentional or they ran out of castle musics but there are a lot of good potential castle musics out there from other games.
➤ No Yoshi! They were all probably killed in World 7 (Valley of the Dead) ;(
➤ Bowser battle was identical to the SMB3 version. I expected a little bit unique.
➤ There's no warp pipe or star leading back to the original overworld after you beat the dimensional entity in its own palace. The reason why the video was cut back to Bowser's Castle when it was time to showcase the special world.


Conclusion: I love playing the hack and its visuals. I just hoped there was more to the story but if it's supposed to be a very normal game then it makes sense to have a very normal title as well lol. I mean it works the same way the other way around too, heh. I'd still give it a high rating though!
