Here is a game for the SNES that was originally going to be released in 1995, but got cancelled, even though it was complete, that game is Star Fox 2. This game did not get an official release until 2017 for the Super Nintendo Classic Edition.
As for the plot of this game, Team Star Fox continue their battle with Andross, the Emperor of Venom, who plans to take over the Lylat System, and General Pepper calls in Fox, Falco, Peppy, and Slippy to to defend Corneria from Andross and his forces before they can do any critical damage to Corneria.
Two new characters join Star Fox in their adventure, and this is the only game those two ever appear, Fay and Miyu assist Star Fox with their adventure, and this game would have been the debut of Team Star Wolf instead of Star Fox 64.
The good thing about this game is that you can play as six different characters, so you are not limited to playing as Fox in this game, so they did at least add Miyu and Fay as other character options, as each Star Fox team member have their own custom Arwings.
Some of the mechanics from Star Fox 2 would then appear in later games from the series, the walker mode were added in Star Fox Zero for the Wii U in 2016, and some of the gameplay elements would be in Star Fox Command for DS. After all those years after its planned release, this game did get some good reviews after not being out until 2017.
