Here's another cover from one of my favourite shmups on the Super Nintendo, Spriggan Powered!
I had covered the 2nd stage theme Upper Atmosphere before, and while that one is still my favourite song in the game I felt it would be nice if I covered the 3rd one as well, and here are my results! I hope you like it ^^
Seriously though, the music in this game is *really* complicated-sounding, but that's what makes it so good! I love how they've got so much polyphony going on (that's when a song has more than a single melody playing at the same time while still harmonising together, which may or may not include the baseline as its own melody), the only other game I can think off the top of my head that also had this much polyphony was Final Fight 3, although I think FF3 sounds better but that's not to discredit Spriggan Powered, it sounds pretty amazing on its own right, and the baselines in this soundtrack are mind-blowing!
The original song has up to 7 channels playing at the same time, but the majority of the song only uses 4 channels, so I was pretty comfortable with transcribing it onto the PCE's 6 channels, with plenty of room for dat sweet reverb~♥
But even if I had room to fit everything in that doesn't mean it wasn't challenging to cover! I mean, not only does this game like to switch around the channels in which instruments play, but there are also a lot of intricate note progressions and note-timings going on in here, particularly in the baselines, and whenever the song decides to use triplets (which is very often), oh and, of course, cramming all of the percussion on a single channel whereas the original often uses 2 channels for that, but I think I'm getting better at it! Even if the drums lose quite a bit of their punch when played together with the hats...
