Snowball Power [雪合戦ぱわぁど] Game Sample - PC/Doujin
36There is a description for this game... barely! I will update this after the ball drop... but there isn't a whole lot to say beyond enjoy some quirky snowball shooting action! Developed by HamCorossam, a semi-popular Doujin dev with deteriorating health...
Released in 2010, HamCorossam has been releasing Doujin games for some time and is perhaps best known for Gunroad (a controversial and gore-filled game like Dynamite Duke and such) and Puchi Spray (an "ESP RA.DE." clone of sorts) but have several over titles out there, most of the shooting variety. It kinda makes sense too, as many of his games are developed with ASCII's obscure "Shooter Maker 95" engine, which is rather temperamental and doesn't like tampering of any kind. Snowball Power is a little unique among his works as it is a single-screen title with more unique elements and lasts roughly 20 minutes or so. This video illustrates various things and runs down the time to cover about 1/3 of the game (there is a full playthrough by the creator if you're interested, this is just a HQ video for our archives).
As Garako-chan, the player is out to (somewhat peacefully) botch the plans of alien invaders who happen to be... chickens? Yeah, chickens utilizing powerful machinery, ancient technology, and who also hired a killer who earns 450 Pico to pay her student loans... zany is probably the best way to describe the game and most chicken battles are just an excuse to toss a short wave of foes at you that automatically escalate into a bigger baddie encounter, but the title does sport some nice Arcade-style action. Garako can run side to side, jump, double-jump, and toss snowballs!! As such, she does not have rapid-fire capabilities; on the contrary, she can throw regular snowballs (up and down) or super snowballs (which penetrate enemies and) but she can only carry a limited amount at one time. Super snowballs take the place of three regular snowballs and she will slowly accumulate snow over time but waiting is a sure-fire way to lose... so why not scoop some off the ground like in a real snowball fight? Garako cn crouch and scoop snow to rapidly replenish her stock and is defense-less without the snow, so learning when and where to grab snow is the key to victory. She can also take a bit of a beating and won't die in one hit, but she can get hurt by almost everything and can even be poisoned by certain attacks... wowee!
It's all good though... because destroying enemies constantly rewards the player with points and various foodstuffs which can replenish lost health. You can even get the rare 1-up and antidote drops to recover from poison and the game has many boss battles to test your reflexes. Speaking of boss battles, there is a time limit during these encounters and while it is fairly generous, running out of time will automatically result in the loss of a life. Conversely, doing well will earn the player more points and better rewards, so there is some incentive on exploiting bosses to get the quickest times. Just be warned that you have the clear the game in one go as there is no continue feature. The game has some neat pixel graphics and cool tunes provided by Rengoku Teien. As of this time, posting the game is actually "prohibited" by the creator, though the game is out there if you do a little digging. Enjoy.
