Solar Coaster is a space shooter developed and published by Optyx Software for the Amstrad CPC in 1987. The final stage challenges players to penetrate the defenses of a massive mothership, evoking comparisons to the arcade classic Phoenix.
The game’s fast-paced action and simple controls make it an engaging experience for fans of the genre—it's arguably the 80s space shooter with the fastest-moving enemies I've ever played. However, poor collision detection spoils the fun. All too often, you’ll find yourself wondering what hit you, as your ship can be destroyed even when it appears to be at a safe distance from enemies.
On a personal note, Solar Coaster is one of the few games that really got under my skin. As you’ll see in the video, I completed the first loop without losing a single life, only to earn zero bonus points. I get it—I should have been quicker—but I wanted to clear the mothership stage 100%, leaving no trace of enemy life. I dodged everything they threw at me, from lasers to kitchen sinks, and instead of rewarding me, the game denied me the bonus I’d worked so hard for. It felt incredibly unjust and killed my motivation to play competitively during the second loop. Let’s just say I made sure to voice my opinion when it came time to enter my name in the high score, lol.
