Here is your review for Solo: A Star Wars Story.
The thing I didn't touch on in the video is how I feel that it is a bit early to call this movie a "flop."
Is it under performing compared to what we consider a "blockbuster" these days? Yes. Is it under performing compared to how much money they put into making it? Yes. Is it under performing compared to the studio's own expectation? That is debatable. Then HOW, oh nerdy one, is this movie NOT a flop? I'll tell you.
First, you have to consider one aspect of how the Hollywood machine works normally versus how it is working for this movie. Normally a studio will dump the amount of money it took to make a movie back into the marketing budget, effectively doubling the cost of the movie. Sometimes this number is even larger. For Solo, though, they haven't put that much into the marketing. Being as the cost of this movie went through the roof when they had to change the directoral staff, and the little snafu with those marketing posters that were direct rip offs of someone else's art. But this is a Star Wars movie, how much do you REALLY need to market it?
Next you have to look at the ACTUAL projections for opening weekend. I say "actual" projections, because the projections made just before opening were a little over zealous. The projections from Disney the week before opening put it at a little $100 million, which is right about where it performed. Which, if you consider the fact that it opened against Deadpool 2's second week AND the lingering Avengers: Infinity War, that's not too bad. ALSO, if you consider that it opened on Memorial Day Weekend, a time where lots of people DON'T go out to the movies, that is almost a good opening weekend.
Lastly, a movie NEVER makes it's money back opening weekend. Often, too, media projections are wrong because they never consider the marketing budget. That will be doubly important with this movie because of the "fan" backlash. All the Star Wars fanboys who were "boycotting" this movie because they hated The Last Jedi, will see this movie before it leaves theaters. They will deny it, but most of them won't be able to resist when they continue to hear reviews that aren't labeling this movie as horrible like they want it to be.
Will we get another movie with this cast? Yes, probably under the guise of a Lando Calrissian movie I would imagine.
