Someday You'll Return is a psychological horror and thriller adventure game. You play the role of Daniel, who is a rather unlikable character, searching for his estranged daughter, Stella, who is lost in the woods.
As you explore the woods in search of Stella, you come across a lot of super natural occurrences and observe some disturbing sights. The game does a pretty good job of keeping you on your toes and providing enough imagery and sounds to keep you at a sense of unease throughout your playthrough.
The game play is very similar to an open world exploration game. You can navigate the open country freely. Handy color coded trail makers direct you to your destination so it's pretty hard to get lost. As you explore, you come across many puzzles.
This is where the game design can get to be a little obtuse. Most of the puzzles are not difficult but can lead to slightly frustrating moments when you lack the correct pieces to solve it and the game does not give you enough feedback as to what you are doing wrong. There is no coherent design flow here other than wandering around and checking items to see if you can interact with them. To be fair, for most puzzles, the game does give you enough hints to point you in the right direction.
Exploration and puzzle solving segments are interspersed with narrative exposition which resemble a walking simulator. Here you observe bits and pieces of the story being revealed as the truth of what happened begins to unfold.
Someday You'll Return is another solid game in the horror genre. It's more unsettling than it is frightening and parts of the game will leave you on edge.
