This is a charming platformer by Capcom based on the Chinese legend of the monkey king. The lovely cute graphics fooled me into thinking this would be an easy NES like platformer that I would complete on my first go. Absolutely not. It’s brutal.
There is a lot of strategy involved in purchasing items from the shop to ensure you don’t die, because you have limited continues and the levels are very long with no checkpoints. On many occasions I had to scrape by the skin of my teeth hoping to get to the next shop or hidden health item. There are lots of secrets in the levels and you really need to learn your way around as it’s easy to get stuck if you don’t know the correct route or where a key might be.
The combat is good enough with a lengthy staff but the jump height is paltry.
The bosses are very tough and can ruin a run due to having to beat them with the energy you have left from doing the long hard level. The last level is a boss rush of the previous bosses followed by a 2-form last boss, so it is incredibly unforgiving.
It’s a very good game, but doesn’t need to be so hard.
