Haven't we seen this playthrough before? Well yes but actually no, despite what the game manual may say about both Sonic and Knuckles' stories taking place at the same time, Knuckles' story takes place after the events of Sonic's story.
Knuckles is a resident of Angel Island and the guardian of the Master Emerald after helping Sonic defeat Dr. Robotnik and save Angel Island, Knuckles is called back into action as one of Robotnik's robots EggRobo is currently on a one robot mission to steal the Master Emerald and destroy Angel Island.
