Sonic 3D Blast - Full Playthrough - Summer of Sonic
Sonic is back, and in 3D this time!
Sonic 3D Blast... man I debated on whether or not I'd even play this game since its hands down one of my least favorite Sonic games on the Genesis/Mega Drive, but I figured I'd get it out of the way so that I wouldn't have any regrets later.
This game is weird for me. As a kid, I loved it, never owned it but whenever I would go over to a friends house that did it was always an event, but as I got older... I could never really bring myself to look at this one fondly, not even through rose tinted glasses, and while I have strong opinions of some of the things in the game, mostly the weird controls, I can still put my opinions aside and acknowledge that this was a very innovative game, what with it being Sonic's first foray into the 3rd dimension and what that meant for the Sonic series going forward. The soundtrack also slaps, Diamond Dust Zone and Panic Puppet Zone's themes are so far ingrained in my memory that I can hear them when I think back on this game, the credits theme as well, that alone made it worth the playthrough.
In recent times, I've learned to find an entirely new appreciation for the game, by way of watching the videos made by the game's programmer, Jon Burton, who runs a channel called GameHut that goes over a lot secrets and quirks of the game which I find really interesting. If you liked Sonic 3D Blast even a little bit you're doing yourself a disservice by not going over there and watching those videos, heck one of which is showcasing how Super Sonic would've worked in the game and definitely worth a watch.
Anyways, this brings the Classic Genesis/Mega Drive era of mainline games to a close, which means next we're off to the Modern era of Sonic games. Stay tuned for what I assume will be a multipart series of Sonic Adventure videos.
