The famous Metal Sonic race. Nowadays whenever Metal Sonic appears, they will at least reference this race, usually with the music too.
Metal isn't too hard to beat, since he's actually a fair bit slower than you. If he falls behind though, he will use his V. Maximum Overdrive Attack to rocket back into the lead. Just don't be too slow (and definitely don't touch Eggman's 1 hit kill laser), and you should be fine. There's also a top layer of blocks you can get up to if you're good enough, and there's less obstacles up here.
