1Sonic the Fighters (ソニックファイターズ, Sonikku faitāzu?) (or Sonic Championship in North America), is the first fighting game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The game was released in 1996 for Arcade by Sega with the help of the company AM2.
In 2005, Sonic the Fighters was included in the Sonic Gems Collection, released for Nintendo Game Cube and Playstation 2 in 2005. In October 2012, Sega announced that the game Sonic the Fighters, as well as the games Virtua Fighters 2, Fighting Vipers, Virtua On, and Virtua Strikers, will have an HD version for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade platforms. The five games will be released together under the name "Model 2 Collection". The launch of the collection is scheduled for the end of 2012.
