This is a quick playthrough I did of the tricky counter-clockwise "spiral" special stage which is also playable (as the secret 8th special stage) in Sonic 3.

1) Firstly I show-off an easier way of beating it. By jumping over the row of "pinball" spheres to get to the center of the spiral (which you couldn't do on the Sonic 3 version), I then collect the spheres in the clockwise direction (instead of counter-clockwise) as the spiral gradually opens out and the corridors get longer which makes it easier as the special stage gets faster and faster.

2) I then play and beat the special stage the hard way. Running through the spiral counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise) as the corridors get shorter and shorter and the special stage gets faster and faster and becomes very difficult.

3) I then show-off another easier way of beating it (which you could also do in the Sonic 3 version). By jumping over the red spheres to get to the center of the spiral, I then collect the spheres in the clockwise direction (instead of counter-clockwise) as the spiral gradually opens out and the corridors get longer which makes it easier as the special stage gets faster and faster.
