Sonic Mania - Part 8 - Flying Battery Zone Act 2
Sonic is still safely on the Flying Battery airship, and thus Act 2 will begin. This time, there's a greater focus on Sonic's time outside of the airship, and unlike in Act 1, the Flying Battery travels through a thundercloud shortly after Sonic goes back in, and he'll be greeted with some gusty winds slowly shoving Sonic to the left at all times he's outside. Act 2 borrows a lot of elements from Sonic 2's Wing Fortress Zone as well, and as you'll see, it's also a lot longer. (I mention Madmoles and the live currents in the lower paths--as I took the upper paths, you won't see them here.)
Giant Gold Ring Count:
Total: 4
Available in one go: 2
This time, the Giant Gold Ring scheme is somewhat different. It took a LONG time due to the length of this stage and the fact that it has two maps (an interior map and an exterior map), but I found 4 of them. They're paired up into two mutually exclusive paths, so I could only grab two of them at a time. I'll show the other two later. Maybe.
Badniks Returning from Act 1:
Blaster
Technosqueek
New Badniks:
Clucker - A chicken-like Badnik that emerges from a turret and fires projectiles forward. They're immobile but are often placed where Sonic has to dodge the projectiles to reach them. Scratch from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is based on the Clucker.
Madmole - These Badniks operate the live electrical wires found in the lower areas of Act 2. Attacking the control rooms hanging form the ceiling where they operate will destroy them and render the wires inactive.
Other Sonic References:
Sonic 1 - Like in Act 1, broken Motobugs and Splatses can be found in the trash heaps. Broken Burrobots are also now visible.
Sonic CD - The live wires found in the lower areas are lifted from Wacky Workbench.
Sonic 2 - This stage borrows many design elements from Wing Fortress Zone in its exterior regions, such as topography, semi-solid platforms, and Clucker enemies.
Sonic 3 - There are curved tunnels where Sonic gets blown around by the wind that function exactly like the tunnels in Hydrocity Zone with strong water currents.
Sonic & Knuckles - Madmole originates from this game's Mushroom Hill Zone.
Sonic Mania - Like in Act 1, broken Tubinauts and Rattlekillers can be found in the trash heaps.
Waiting for Sonic at the end of this stage is the Egg Spider. It cannot be harmed by normal means and instead must be collided from a high speed to bounce it onto the spikes lining the walls. It can also shoot three electrical balls (which I think the Lightning Shield protects against--UPDATE--yes, it does). This can be a rather tough boss due to how long it takes to fight it, especially since the collision detection isn't perfect. That, and Tails following behind Sonic creates problems too because he will often interfere with Sonic's strikes on the Egg Spider.
By the way, this is the origin for the meme about Eggman's niece (who goes by many names). The idea is that Eggman is upside-down in the Egg Spider, but the view of the cockpit can also look like a little girl with wild brown hair and a yellow tiara.
You'd think there'd be an easy transition here in Sonic leaping off the Flying Battery like in Sonic & Knuckles, but the game just fades out. No explanation on how Sonic got to the next Zone.
