Sonic the Fighters was an arcade fighting game developed by SEGA's AM2 division for the Model 2 Arcade board. The game came about when Masahiro Sugiyama, a character designer from the AM2 division, decided it'd be fun to insert Sonic and Tails into the other AM2 arcade fighting game, Fighting Vipers. The gaming legend Yu Suzuki, responsible for classics such as Shenmue and Out Run, saw what Sugiyama had done, and loved the idea of a separate, Sonic based fighting game. The idea was then presented to Yuji Naka, despite initial worries that Naka would not like the premise of the idea's violent spin on Sonic's world, despite the comical nature of said violence. However, Yuji Naka loved the idea, and the game entered development.
In America, it saw a very limited release as Sonic Championship, as SEGA of America thought what Yu Suzuki had feared Naka would think-it gave Sonic a negative, violent image. Yet despite this, Sonic still appeared in Sonic Battle, a portable fighting game for the GameBoy Advance, and most recently appeared in Super Smash Brothers Brawl alongside various Nintendo characters.
To make up for the poor distribution in America, a SEGA Saturn version of the game was planned, just as Fighting Vipers and Virtua Fighters, it's two biggest inspirations, had before. Sadly, the SEGA Saturn port never materialised, and no media of said port was ever shown. That said, in the SEGA Saturn exclusive Fighters Megamix, a crossover of AM2's major franchises in one massive fighting game, Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polar Bear do make appearances as playable characters. Also included are two Sonic the Fighters stages-South Island for Bean (Although this was Knuckles' home stage in the original Sonic the Fighters) and Aurora Icefield, Bark's original home stage from Fighters-though the walls that surrounded Bark's stage in the original game are missing here.
The game did eventually make it home, with the release of Sonic Gems Collection. In fact, very recently, the game was also re-made in HD, with the addition of the infamous scrapped character Honey the Cat, and the boss characters Metal Sonic and Dr. Eggman included as playable characters. Even more impressive was the online play support added.
