i really didn't love sonic 1. sure, it's a decent game mechanically, but many of the stages feel intent on slowing you down as much as they can. it's mostly a level design issue.
sonic 2 fixes that, adds more levels, and keeps with the great music. what's not to love? while there are some pretty terrible enemy placements (most notably ones in metropolis zones after springs or boosts), and the final boss is incredibly unintuitive and not fun to fight, the rest of the game is great! it's not perfect by any means, and there are still moments when you're slowed to a halt, but it's much less of an issue than in sonic 1.
the new gameplay mechanics at play here are also great. the new stage hazards and platforms both make sense and are super fun to play around, and sonic's kit feels much more in depth with the addition of the spin dash.
the new levels are also all fantastic. i really liked hilltop zone; that and casino night were my favorites of the game. while most of the levels are done within a few minutes, they're more memorable and impactful than most of the level designs in... say, a mario game, or even a kirby game.
the music is still fantastic. masato nakamura knocked it out of the fucking park yet again. banger after banger.
the art is pretty much the same as sonic 1, other than some slight UI changes, all of which look better in my opinion. the vibrant colors and beautiful backgrounds are a sight to behold.
there's no story. or not enough to be mentioned. not much to say about that.
it's a great game, a staple of the 90s, and really when sonic started to get on his feet as a franchise. it's well worth a run through if you're a fan of this style of gameplay.
