Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 - 10th Anniversary
27A decade ago a brand new Sonic game was released which had sought to revitalize the Adventure formula with a few design tweaks and a more cinematic approach assuming a considerably high production value with the help of the then new gaming hardwares' capabilities.
Due to various known circumstances the game ultimately failed to deliver the experience that it was meant to become and thanks to the helpful existence of the internet meme ""culture"" it became a twisted and overexaggerated negative icon for many Sonic fans despite the it's redeeming qualities.
The following mass hysteria scared Sega and Sonic Team universes away from even the thought of making something that even remotely resembles '06, so they ditched almost all of the previously successful and loved game elements and proceeded to soft-reboot the series into something that ultimately became Unleashed and it's slightly modified semi-sequel "lite editions" (Colors, Lost World and Generations).
Action-heavy storytelling with multiple characters taking part in an interesting plot, challenging gameplay carrying a sense of accomplishment for those who can stand their grounds against it: properties like these were barely featured in the following Sonic games or not at all. It took literally A DECADE for Sega to consider a similar tone for a Sonic game and even that was an unstable step since they felt the urgent desire to shoehorn something into it to ensure their safety.
Just for the record, I'm not saying that this game is perfect, but it's certainly not as bad as some people are making it to be. My personal issues regarding it are strictly technical (hence the frequent and long loading times and the sucka## game engine's alpha version struggling to run at full speed) and I've played far worse than this.
I actually like this game a lot, because I see the unpolished diamond within the pile of rubble and ducktape which would have only needed more time and multiple rounds of bugtesting to become the greatest Sonic game ever made.
Too bad Sonic'06, but I'll always like ya no matter what.
