0Sonic Wings Special is a scrolling shooter game developed by Video System for the Sega Saturn console in 1996. The game is part of the Sonic Wings series and features fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay with a variety of aircraft to choose from.Players can select from a range of characters, each with their own unique plane and weapons, and battle through a series of stages set in different parts of the world. TSonic Wings Special includes a two-player co-op mode, allowing players to team up with a friend to take on the game's challenges together. The game's graphics are colourful and detailed, with a distinctive retro feel that is reminiscent of classic arcade games.
Review – Sonic wings is a top-class Saturn shmup. It’s very easy to get into due to the culture of vertical shmups at this time where they give the player infinite credits.This makes the game easy to playthrough in one go except as you can just dip into the continues without restarting the level – until the last level. This dodgy design decision ramps up the difficulty from 1 to 10 in an instant. Not only are you forced to do the last level in one continue, it’s also much harder than the other levels, so it requires actual skill. Which is a surprise since it was so forgiving for the rest of the game.I must stress that the difficulty is when you choose the Moscow path rather than the Hawaii path. When I did a second playthrough choosing Hawaii, it was much easier.The Moscow path has a multiple boss forms in a row and some of them just throw bullet hell at you where you just have to be lucky to avoid as you will run out of smart bombs.There are lot’s of characters to choose form too that have different weapons and also different smart bombs, which is quite unique. When you complete the game with one character, it unlocks a second from for that character with a new set of weapons. So essentially you have 16 characters, weapon sets and smart bomb sets. Couple this with multiple branching level paths, and you’ve got a game with a lot of replayability.Also included in this game is a music CD that has a real band playing 3 songs for the game.I enjoyed this game a lot and was happy to go for a second playthrough.
