SonSon is an early Capcom game, initially released in the arcades in 1984. This was during the developer's shooter phase, with SonSon appearing alongside the likes of Vulgus, 1942, and Exed Exes. The game itself is a bit of an anomaly, as it's not a pure shooter, but something of a shooter/platformer hybrid. Unlike Sega and Konami, Capcom was never a mega-porter, and this 1986 Japan-exclusive Famicom variant was the only way to play the game at home back in the day. As far as story goes, this is one of the earliest documented video games to be based on the epic 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West. There were a couple of other notable Journey to the West Famicom games that followed, like Ganso Saiyuuki: Super Monkey Daibouken (generally regarded as one of the worst and most dysfunctional games ever made) and Saiyuuki World (a reskinned Wonder Boy in Monster Land).
SonSon has both one- and two-player modes, with the two-player mode featuring simultaneous cooperative play. Player one takes on the role of "SonSon" who is modeled after the classic monkey king Sun Wukong. Player two is assigned TonTon, or Zhu Bajie the pig. Their goal: to reach the Buddha statue in Tenjiku (a historic Japanese name for India). The game is comprised of one large seamless stage, though it's divided into various segments marked by numbered rocks. There is (mostly persistent) autoscrolling (ironically, the characters appear to be heading east), but monkey and pig do not fly freely. Instead, they scuttle over six parallel horizontal platforms, each marked by the occasional gap. There is no dedicated jump button; instead pressing up or down will transfer a heroic mammal to a platform in that given direction. Once on the highest tier, it is possible to jump, but it's a purely vertical leap. And no, while on the lowest tier it's not possible to send monkey or pig careening down into the water below. The heroes fire undetermined projectiles, activated by pressing A or B. There are no true power-ups, but the copiously available food-based items increase the point total, which will eventually result in an extra life. No continues are available and a single successful playthrough clocks in at around twenty minutes. It's a fairly simple, but innovative, formula that really wasn't replicated anywhere else outside of SNK's Psycho Soldier (1987).
The emulator used is "Nestopia".
