Sound it Out! I play Mel in red by Patrick Palmer
6Sound it Out is a creative experiment where I look at a piece of visual art, and on the spot come up with a tune to describe it on the violin. Today's subject for Sound it Out is Mel in red by Patrick Palmer.
This work is beautiful, to see the silhouette and shadows of this woman's body all done by this slightly pale, less saturated, and mysterious red color. As a woman, I think the color and the posture of the woman in this painting describe so well the doubt, worry, and self-consciousness women feel about themselves and what they do in this world, while all those feelings are also qualities that end up making women bloom and become strong, self-aware, and nurturing, hence beautiful. So I try to describe all of that on the violin as I look at this painting, the music ends up being a bit... going in and out of feeling lost and found, it feels open ended, also a bit up for interpretation and imagination... I don't know... did I mention that women tend to feel doubt, worry, and self-consciousness in this world?
