Space Harrier 2 is a sequel to an arcade classic funnily enough called Space Harrier. It was released in 1988 as a launch title for the Sega Mega Drive with it later coming out for a bunch of computer formats such as the Amiga, Atari ST, DOS, commodore 64 etc.

Its a simple shooter where you move automatically at the screen shooting and dodging all the enemies which are coming at you. In terms of game play there is very little different between the original, it's really just a expansion pack with new twelve levels and enemies to encounter, however many of the baddies are re-skins of the originals.

Whilst I love the original, there's one thing that really bothers me about this sequel - the speed. It feels like at some points that the action is moving at around 60% of what it should be, maybe this was a technical issue what with it being an early Mega Drive title. It certainly feels like you have more time to see the bullets this time around as the previous title you pretty had to start moving before you saw the projectile. There's also something odd with the bullets, if you select rapid fire and hold down the trigger, the player will only be able to fire off five shots at a time, rather than a continuous stream, this can often get you killed as you wait for the existing bullets to go off the horizon. No doubt this was done to keep the frame rate up, but it makes you wonder why the rapid fire is there as an option to begin with.
