Space Hopper Race
101A space hopper is a rubber ball with a diameter of about 60cm. The ball has a large handle that allows one to sit on it without falling off, by holding on to the handle.
The space hopper was a popular activity toy of the 1970s but has recently made a resurgence as many ‘40 somethings’ try to regain their youth. The new space hoppers are also attracting a whole new generation of fans.
The world's biggest space hopper race took place on a cold but sunny winter’s day in Brighton on the South coast of England. All the money raised from the event went to testicular cancer research. Over 60 people including Father Christmas and Batman bounce their way into the record books.
The space hopper was invented by Aquilino Cosani of Ledragomma, an Italian company that manufactured toy rubber balls. He patented the idea in Italy in 1968, and in the United States in 1971. Cosani called the toy "Pon-Pon". Space hoppers were introduced to the United Kingdom in 1969.
