Here's an interesting take on Space Invaders. Since this game was only made by Midway without Taito's participation. The game was only made on a cocktail cabinet, and two players on opposite sides can destroy the other sides' aliens as well, and are able to destroy each others' laser cannons, which really takes a life from them. So this would be the first Space Invaders game to allow for versus play.
