On this day in 2001, Space Shuttle Atlantis launched on STS-104.

This video is a fragment, compressing slightly the first 2 minutes and 4 seconds of flight into just under 1 minute and 50 seconds, but it is - apparently - a native high-definition source taken at launch in 2001 - can't even begin to imagine the cost of such equipment back then!. The source material is fragmentary, but I present it here in its entirety as it survives.

The audio is taken from NASA's official coverage of the launch and matched up to the video as best as possible - some cuts had to be made to synchronize the PAO's callouts with booster separation. The rest of the ambient audio is a custom composite track, using audio from STS-104, STS-116, STS-117, STS-133, and STS-134.
