On this day in 2001, Space Shuttle Atlantis launched on STS-104.

This video is an attempt to make a contiguous, cohesive reconstruction of the first 2 and half minutes of STS-104, utilizing an AI upscaled version of NASA's official broadcast and an - apparently - native high-definition source of unknown origin taken at launch in 2001. Can't even begin to imagine the cost of such equipment back then! The NASA coverage is supplied to fill gaps in the roughly 30 seconds of lost time in the high definition source fragment, with the HD material coming back in at approximately T+ 35 seconds through SRB separation. My desire to render the high resolution material viewable in as appropriate a state as possible stems from the material’s uniqueness, being a native HD source from 2001, in addition to the atmospheric conditions present for STS-104’s launch, which enabled the visualization of Wilson clouds at SRB ignition, wingtip vortex effects, and linear optical distortions associated with transonic boundary shock.

The audio is taken from NASA's official coverage of the launch and matched up to the fragmentary HD video as best as possible. The rest of the ambient audio is a custom composite track, using audio from STS-104, STS-116, STS-117, STS-133, and STS-134.
