On this day in 1984, Space Shuttle Discovery launched on STS-51-A. Considered by many to be "the ultimate Shuttle mission," 51-A was, arguably, the most ambitious flight to date for the Shuttle program. In addition to deploying two communications satellites, Discovery also captured and returned two malfunctioning communications satellites, which had been deployed by Challenger on STS-41-B in February of 1984.
