Spaced Out is a deathmatch shooter from Spaced Out Studios, headed by Sadistic Penguin.

The premise is a simple one- build a ship and blow up other ships. There are three classes of ship to choose from- scouts, light and speedy but lacking power, the slow powerhouse juggernaut Bomber, and the Fighter which lies somewhere in the middle. The ship you choose stays with you for the duration of the game, but everything about it can be upgraded. Upgrades are purchased with Credits earned for destroying enemy ships.

The controls are more or less identical to those of Asteroids, including the inertia mechanics. This inertia also affects some of the heavier weapons you can purchase.

The game uses a clever Energy system to ensure you keep your ship in balance. Powerful weapons use up more energy than weaker weapons, and as energy is also tied to your shields you have to maintain a balance between firing and staying alive during a firefight. Energy systems and storage can also be upgraded along with your ship to allow use of the stronger weapons. In this video my ship is overpowered at the start and uses so much energy when firing I barely have enough to sustain me in a dogfight.

Despite it's perpetually unfinished nature Spaced Out remains a solid and addictive game.
