Spaceflight Simulator Tutorial Episode 34 - Advanced Orbital Rendezvous (With Commentary)
1Today we are doing some Advanced Orbital Rendezvous maneuvers. The goal for this video is to teach you the basics of launching and burning directly into a Rendezvous path. You need to know a few things though:
First, you need to know is how long, and how far around the planet you need to get a stable orbit with the craft you are launching. This is going to change based on the craft, and the height above the planet you are planning to do the rendezvous at.
Second, you need to figure out how far around the planet the target module goes in the time it took you to launch.
Third, launch the craft, and wait for the target craft to reach a position of: the launched crafts orbital intersect, minus the traveled distance of the target. So for us, we need to launch when the target is at about 11:00. This should allow for you to have a rough encounter with the target craft, as soon as your apoapsis meets the target's orbital path.
Fourth, during your launch monitor the "Closest Approach" marker, to ensure it stays even, and around our apoapsis.
Finally, once you have a rough encounter, fine tune your approach to ensure a good close encounter and use your main thruster to match the target's speed. Then dock, and you are done.
