PLOT: Six months prior to the game's events, Dubai, UAE, was struck by the most severe series of dust storms in its history. Despite initial denial from Dubai's leaders and wealthy elite, they eventually evacuated clandestinely, abandoning many residents. Colonel John Konrad, leader of the 33rd Battalion, US Army, suffering from PTSD, returned from Afghanistan just as the storms hit. Offering his unit's assistance in relief efforts, Konrad defied orders from the US government to abandon the city and its people, deserting with the 33rd instead. As the storms worsened, a massive wall of dust engulfed Dubai, cutting off all communication and transportation. The 33rd declared martial law but struggled amidst chaos, facing riots and resource shortages. The last known communication revealed their attempt to lead a civilian caravan out of the city, which never materialized. Subsequently, Dubai was declared a no man's land, with the 33rd accused of treason and barred from leaving or receiving external updates.
STORY: The game begins with Delta Operatives Walker, Adams, and Lugo in a helicopter over Dubai, engaging in combat before crashing due to a sandstorm. In the present, they navigate through a buried Dubai, encountering Insurgents and learning about the conflict between the 33rd Battalion and Exiles. Atrocities committed by all sides are revealed, with the CIA manipulating events. Walker's bias toward Colonel Konrad is challenged as they uncover the truth. The team faces moral dilemmas, such as executing civilians and confronting the consequences of their actions. As tensions rise, hallucinations haunt Walker, leading to tragic outcomes including the death of Lugo. Walker confronts Konrad's legacy, realizing his own culpability in the events. In a final confrontation, Walker confronts the truth of his actions and must reckon with his choices in the face of his own delusions.
