[Speedrun] Yu-Gi-Oh! The Falsebound Kingdom - Yugi Story - 2:07:12
Recorded April 23, 2020.
It took a couple of weeks, but I finally made progress in this game that I hadn't played in about five years.
I don't know where this game ranks in terms of weirdest Yu-Gi-Oh! games, but this real-time strategy RPG is definitely high on the list. It even has an isekai plot, yet this game was made before isekai became the trendy anime thing to do. I often have a greater fascination with the more unusual games in the franchise.
The thing that made this run possible, though, was the Konami code: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A. Every time you use this code in any random spot during a mission (with the d-pad), you gain 573 gold. Some missions give you time to use it many times in a row. Attack-boosting equipment that would be useful in this run costs anywhere from 600-900 gold. Let's just say that money troubles are no longer a thing when you use this code enough.
I had to think long and hard before resorting to it because I've heard other runners wanting to separate runs based on whether or not the code is ever used. That said, Kaiba Story runs already used this code. Other Yu-Gi-Oh! games allow and encourage the use of passwords to get specific cards. It feels arbitrary to me.
The whole idea is to simply power up every monster as much as you can. This route combines the best of both worlds from the world record run and my previous run. In other words, equipment is aggressively bought at the beginning while still retaining the ability to use Kuriboh's multi-targeting special attack for the endgame. It's that powerful and too much for me to resist.
I still need to look at why Phantom Blast didn't work out like usual. I think Shimon having the Horn Imp gave him too big a body to actually move out of the base. I think I'll give it to Fizdis after getting Bakura. I still need to figure out the menuing with the new items, as well. I like having specific inputs to memorize.
