Spider-Hype is an original arcade/strategy game that Roger Taylor was kind enough to release as public domain in 1992. The game itself has built in instructions that scroll across the screen on the bottom, and features 3 different 4-part harmony songs that play during different stages of the game (actual gameplay, winning, and losing). The 3 songs should be recognizable to most people, including a Beatles tune. The object of the game is to trap all of the spiders in the bottom chamber before time runs out. You can shut off the central barrier by holding down a key, and you have to use this to trap them; of course, they are all moving in different directions at all times, which makes this difficult.

Spider-Hyper is the sequel to Roger Taylor's Spider-Hype, which he released to the public domain in 1996, 4 years after the original. Spider-Hyper is unique in Coco gamedom as being the only game that I know of that requires the 6309 upgrade chip (a Hitachi clone of the original Motorola 6809 that featured "hidden" extra instructions, registers, and a faster "native" mode). The extra speed of the 6309 chip allowed Roger to keep the sound quality the same as the original game, but to add in a third chamber which you have to manouevre the spiders through. Like the original, your mission is to trap all of the spiders in the bottom chamber, except now there are 3 instead of 2 chambers. By hitting the F1 key, you cause BOTH chamber walls to disappear. This version is actually harder than the original. Roger later went on to create Projector-3, a 6309 only, 512K, graphic viewer that supports more picture formats than any other Coco viewer in existence, and even some sound formats, that he still sells through his website.
