Hello and welcome back to another video of Xenoblade Chronicles X! Here we showcase the Spike Damage feature in the combat system of XCX that includes its types, uses in builds, crowd-controlling capabilities and damage output.
Spike damage (indicated in purple numbers) isn’t used very often, but is surprisingly useful if built around well. It acts as a passive method of dealing damage so that you don’t have to use arts to damage the enemy; proximity spike lets you damage enemies just by being near them, and counter spike damages them for every hit they deal to you. These features of spike damage are useful in defensive battles where survival needs to be prioritised, because spikes automatically do the attacking for you (people would usually go for glass-cannon builds that would not even require defensive focus due to being so offensively powerful, but it doesn’t hurt to try new builds, does it?).
Here are time markers to save your… uh, time:
{The following keys refer to the type of spike damage used:
[P] = Proximity, [C] = Counter, [E] = Electric Flesh}

00:00 – Definitely the start, where we give a thorough explanation of spike damage
02:11 – Cliffside Camp [P] (the Ganglion base at the edge of the Yawning Giant)
04:05 – Berthold, the Blue-Eyed [P]
06:01 – Du-rha, the Imprisoned [P]
07:45 – Buchwald, the Guardian [P] (NO THERMAL RESISTANCE DOWN SKELL)
09:36 – Buchwald, the Guardian [P] (WITH THERMAL RESISTANCE DOWN SKELL)
10:48 – Dadaan, the Strongest Prone [P]
12:41 – Lugalbanda, the Wanderer-King [P]
13:50 – Joker, the Unknowable [P]
15:03 – Luciel, the Eternal [P]
16:31 – Cliffside Camp [C]
17:50 – Berthold [C]
19:31 – Du-rha [C]
20:58 – Demonstration of the skill Electric Flesh and how it can kill your party members (Remember that this is a bug!)
21:48 – Dadaan, the Strongest Prone [E]
24:54 – Trueno, the Cataclysm [C + E]
26:15 – Joker, the Unknowable [E]
28:52 – Luxaar’s Xern [C + E]
30:23 – Vortice, the Deific Blast [C]
32:47 – Nardacyon, the Shadowless [C] (NO ETHER RESISTANCE DOWN SKELL, and therefore a very scuffed run)
36:44 – Nardacyon, the Shadowless [C] (WITH ETHER RESISTANCE DOWN SKELL, and therefore a brilliant run)
38:30 – Pharsis, the Everqueen [C]
43:25 – Telethia, the Endbringer [C]
51:44 – Maximum proximity spike damage attempt
52:34 – Maximum counter spike damage attempt

No Fun Facts to look for in the video this time, sorry!
My overall thoughts are that spike damage is a very good source of passive damage that can be used against enemies even when you are pushed against a corner, for example, if you are toppled by Luciel and are completely helpless, or if Vortice launches you off Mount M’gando, you can use these to help you fight them back regardless. Counter spike is especially useful for its supposedly infinite range, so enemies attacking from very far can still be defeated. Both types are also effective for dealing with large groups of enemies, although counter spike is mostly better in this case because it is twice as strong and the player does not need to be near enemies for it to trigger. The major downside is that the attributes are fixed, but that isn’t much of a deal depending on the enemy it is being used against. It would be if the spikes were physical because no enemy is weak to physical attributes.

On the other hand, the skill Electric Flesh is extremely poor in terms of performance compared to the spike arts. It is bugged (as it can kill party members), is ridiculously weak, and has only a 30% chance to trigger for each hit taken. Its only use is for fooling about.

Once again, thank you for being here and stay tuned for more videos!
