Spinal Breakers is a 1990 Shooting Action Arcade Game by Video System.- Game Play - Full Long Play
Spinal Breakers is a 1990 shooting action arcade game developed by Video System (the same company behind Aero Fighters) and published by American Sammy.
Set in the future as noted in the backstory's Info Dump, a nuclear war has resulted in the futuristic Hildroids - robots created to serve humans - to develop their own intelligence and turn against their creators. Hijacking a time machine made by humans, entire groups of Hildroids have escaped into the past, masquerading as humans into infiltrating human society in different time periods, with the intentions of rewriting history and wipe out the ancestors of mankind.
Captain Waffle, a soldier from the past waking up from cryogenic sleep, learns of the truth. Boarding a Time Machine, it's up to the Captain to fight rogue Hildroids through time, before returning to the Hildroids' lab in America for a final battle.
Spinal Breakers stars Captain Waffle, who would later appear as a hidden character in Sonic Wings 3 and Sonic Wings Special. Waffle, who has been in artificial hibernation on a space station, travels to Earth to fight the organic robots known as the Hildroid, who have been affected by nuclear radiation and somehow have gained the ability to travel through time. They are now taking over human and animal hosts from Earth's past.
The game has three possible endings, two bad and one good:
Worst ending: let the timer run out on any stage. Waffle returns to the space station only to find that his wife Camille and their daughter have been possessed by the Hildroid, and Waffle shoots them both. A third gunshot heard implies that Waffle also commits suicide.
Bad ending: do not let the timer run out, but use a continue at least once. Camille is safe, but Waffle himself has been possessed.
Good ending: do not let the timer run out, and do not any continues. The whole family returns to the space station safely, and the Earth is returned to its normal, pre-Hildroid state.
The Hildroid return in Sonic Wings 3, where they join Fata Morgana in fighting Project Blue in a World War II setting.
