Splatoon 2 Salmon Run Split Screen Experiment (No Audio)
ATTENTION! Before you 'Like' or 'Dislike', and for the viewing recommendation, read the description!
So here's a simulated example on how split screen could have worked in Salmon Run (sorry I used the same clip, I don't have that many Salmon Run clips and I wanted parity). I took a 1280x720p60FPS clip, cropped the sides, and cut the framerate in half when I saved it. 30FPS because let's face it, 60FPS split screen wasn't going to happen without further compromises to the game mode and graphics. Sorry I couldn't drag the HUD over into the corners, that would involve more work ;p
The test is whether split screen can work with Salmon Run, a game mode where situational awareness is key. Split screen will drop a player's horizontal view in half, in this case from 1280px to 640px. Thankfully today's HDTVs and monitors are so wide! However, potential threats from the sides won't appear until it's too late, and potential escape routes and downed crew members would be further obscured from view. Also, players would need to spin around more just to see what's around them. All that combined with 30FPS and narrow Field of Vision (FOV) may lead to motion sickness for some people. 60FPS, and higher frame rates in general, helps keep people from experiencing motion sickness and, at least in my case, helps keep the player updated on what's going on around them and helps them aim better with faster visual feedback (although anyone can get used to either framerate with enough practice). That's because higher framerate targets usually increase a game's input responsiveness as well.
VOTING TIME!
If you feel the splitscreen setup works for you and a local crew mate, visual compromises and all, then hit the 'LIKE' button.
If you prefer the full size of the screen and 60FPS, then hit the 'DISLIKE' button.
Preferred viewing method:
Mobile - Use the YouTube app on a large screen phone, preferably one that is about 6 inches diagonal like the Switch, like a Galaxy or iPhone Plus. Make sure your WiFi/cellular connection is good to ensure HD playback. Watch fullscreen focusing on one side of the video.
Desktop - Please use Chrome or other browser that can ensure HD
playback. Watch on YouTube in both fullscreen and with the standard viewer for screens that are between 19-23 inches diagonal, or Theater Mode for smaller laptops and larger tablets. In both cases, focus only on one side of the video.
