Squid Game has been taking the world by storm since it debuted on Netflix. The South Korean series is the brainchild of director Hwang Dong Hyuk, from a script he had written over 10 years ago. The series takes inspiration from franchises such as The Hunger Games and Battle Royale and follows a group of broke and cash-strapped men and women who are invited to a mysterious tournament where they would partake in a series of children’s games with the winner being awarded 40 million dollars. The deadly true nature of the games is quickly revealed with the players now having to fight for their lives to win the game and make it out of the tournament with their lives. A lot of the fans of the series have taken a liking to the show’s costumes and makeup. The makeup has even started a trend on TikTok where fans have replicated the looks of some of their favorite characters The costumes which include teal jumpsuits, black masks, and pink jumpsuits, are sure to be a hit during the Halloween season. Though what fans may not realize is that all of this has a mountain of symbolism behind it. The costumes and makeup of Squid Game tackle themes of conformity, inequality, rage, fear, and identity. Sure, the aesthetics themselves certainly played a large role when it came to making the series, but sometimes the pieces that look the prettiest have the darkest and most sinister stories behind them. Squid Game has now made jumpsuits, hot pink, and basic shapes frightening.
